Reader Response Draft #3

The webpage “Review: the DJI Mini 2 is the perfect drone for beginners” from Murphy (2020) presents the features and functions of DJI’s photography drone for beginners. The DJI Mini 2 (Mini 2) features include a featherlight design, OcuSync 2.0 transmission, 12-megapixel camera, 3-axis motorized gimbal, Return-To-Home (RTH) function, and long flight time. Weighing at 249g and a folded dimension of 131x81x58 mm makes it convenient to bring out for photography and videography. One of the features includes capturing high-quality footage and photos with “digital zooming to about 2x if you’re shooting in 4K, you can get usable 3x zoom footage at 1080p” as stated in the article by Kronfli and Wilson (2022). The Mini 2 utilizes OcuSync 2.0 transmission for a dependable and long-range distance operation of up to 10 km (Rojwongsuriya, 2023). It is also equipped with a 3-axis motorized gimbal that provides stable and smooth footage, even in windy conditions or during rapid maneuvers. In addition, this drone features the RTH function that programs the drone to automatically return to its takeoff location if it loses contact with the remote controller or when the battery is critically depleted (Murphy, 2020). The drone offers a flight time of up to 31 minutes when fully charged allowing good productivity in a single flight (“DJI Mini 2 VS Mavic Mini”, 2020). With huge improvements in software and hardware, the Mini 2 is the best beginner-level drone in the market compared to its predecessor the DJI Mavic Mini (Mavic Mini).

One improvement in the hardware of the Mini 2 is the 12-megapixel camera. According to the article “DJI Mini 2 VS Mavic Mini” (2020), the upgraded camera not only allows users to shoot at 4K resolution at up to 30 frames per second but also when recording in 1080p, the camera offers a 4x digital zoom feature. In contrast, the Mavic Mini only shoots at a maximum quality of 2.7K resolution with no zoom function. For long-distance filming, the Mini 2 is a better candidate compared to the Mavic Mini.

Another improvement, in terms of software, is the OcuSync 2.0 transmission. Cepeda (n.d.-a) states that the Mini 2 provides a seamless switch between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies, expanding its maximum transmission range to 10 km while the Mavic Mini provides up to only a 4 km transmission range. With increased range and connectivity, drone novices can capture shots from greater heights and distances with the Mini 2.

In addition, the RTH function is an essential feature incorporated into the software. The Mini 2 offers three distinct Return-To-Home modes: Smart RTH, Failsafe RTH, and Low Battery RTH (Cepeda, n.d.-b). This function serves as a safety measure, enabling the Mini 2 to autonomously return to a predefined home location in scenarios such as loss of connection with the remote controller, a critically low battery, or at the discretion of the user (Murphy, 2020). In the Low Battery RTH mode, it is capable of assessing whether its existing battery charge is adequate for a safe return to the Home Point. Hence, when the battery reaches a critically low level, Low Battery RTH will be initiated (Cepeda, n.d.-b).  To conclude, the RTH function is crucial in a beginner drone. This prevents the Mini 2 from being lost and stranded, providing beginners with peace of mind and enhancing the overall flying experience.

Although there are numerous improvements in the hardware and software of the Mini 2, it lacks the obstacle avoidance technology that many high-end drones are equipped with. According to Pavic (2021), the lack of sensors corresponds to not having autonomous track mode and the ability to create hyperlapses. Also, the drone is suboptimal for flying in low light conditions (Kronfli & Wilson, 2022). This increases the stress novice drone users would have if they were flying in confined spaces. However, most novices fly in open terrain, and the restrictions that the Mini 2 comes with do not affect users in operating in most conditions which makes it suitable for them.

In conclusion, the DJI Mini 2 surpasses the DJI Mavic Mini in terms of camera quality, upgraded transmission, and RTH function. With the evidence presented in this article, the Mini 2 stands as the preferred choice with many improved features for beginner drone enthusiasts.
