Critical Reflection

Module learning

This module has been a fulfilling journey that has enabled growth and helped me become a better communicator. I recall being thrilled and overwhelmed with questions about UCS1001 when I first heard about it. Additionally, UCS1001 has provided the opportunity for my peers and I to forge strong connections. This was partially what made me anticipate class every week.

I really enjoyed the first assignment, the self-introduction letter, as it has allowed me to reconnect with my past achievements and find the drive and passion in engineering all over again. The assignment also provided an opportunity for me to discover intriguing information about my classmates, contributing significantly to the initiation of casual conversations outside the class curriculum.

Despite improving my presentation skills, I acknowledge that there are certainly more aspects that I can work on such as my body language. As someone who is an assertive speaker who sometimes neglects the importance of listening to others, UCS1001 has pushed me to continuously practice active listening. This has in turn expanded my horizon, learning fresh ideas from my peers.

Project Learning

One of the challenges I found was ensuring my citations were accurate. As it was a fairly new concept, there were various points I had to pay plenty of attention to, ended up spending a large duration verifying the citations. However, I managed to improve with practice and also with the help of my peers. I learnt to take the perspective of the reader in order to write with better clarity through my reader response. I have always thought that writing is merely taking the information online and copying it into my report. This module changed my thinking as I learnt how to validate resources and conduct interviews to increase my credibility in my team’s technical report. The technical report was daunting for me at the start due to the massive workload. I overcame it by taking it one step at a time and completing it in parts. Not only did I improve my communication skills, but I witnessed my peers benefitting from it too.

Performance on student participation

 Dear Professor Blackstone,

The past 13 weeks have been a fruitful experience for me. Throughout my time here, I have managed to become much better in active listening and be a stronger communicator as well. On top of these, I have gained many fond memories throughout this trimester. I always believed in giving the best in all that I do and constantly improving myself.

I was not only punctual but early for class every week. Although not always called upon to participate in class activities, I gave meaningful inputs that add value to the class learning experience. Being an extrovert, I initiated many group discussions when necessary, and when my peers are in doubt, I actively guide them to the best of my abilities. When someone presents in class, I make sure to pay full attention to them.

All in all, I truly believe that I deserve an "excellent" grade in my class participation with the points mentioned above.

Best Regards,

Royson Ng
