Critical Reflection

Module learning

This module has been a fulfilling journey that has enabled growth and helped me become a better communicator. I recall being thrilled and overwhelmed with questions about UCS1001 when I first heard about it. Additionally, UCS1001 has provided the opportunity for my peers and I to forge strong connections. This was partially what made me anticipate class every week.

I really enjoyed the first assignment, the self-introduction letter, as it has allowed me to reconnect with my past achievements and find the drive and passion in engineering all over again. The assignment also provided an opportunity for me to discover intriguing information about my classmates, contributing significantly to the initiation of casual conversations outside the class curriculum.

Despite improving my presentation skills, I acknowledge that there are certainly more aspects that I can work on such as my body language. As someone who is an assertive speaker who sometimes neglects the importance of listening to others, UCS1001 has pushed me to continuously practice active listening. This has in turn expanded my horizon, learning fresh ideas from my peers.

Project Learning

One of the challenges I found was ensuring my citations were accurate. As it was a fairly new concept, there were various points I had to pay plenty of attention to, ended up spending a large duration verifying the citations. However, I managed to improve with practice and also with the help of my peers. I learnt to take the perspective of the reader in order to write with better clarity through my reader response. I have always thought that writing is merely taking the information online and copying it into my report. This module changed my thinking as I learnt how to validate resources and conduct interviews to increase my credibility in my team’s technical report. The technical report was daunting for me at the start due to the massive workload. I overcame it by taking it one step at a time and completing it in parts. Not only did I improve my communication skills, but I witnessed my peers benefitting from it too.

Performance on student participation

 Dear Professor Blackstone,

The past 13 weeks have been a fruitful experience for me. Throughout my time here, I have managed to become much better in active listening and be a stronger communicator as well. On top of these, I have gained many fond memories throughout this trimester. I always believed in giving the best in all that I do and constantly improving myself.

I was not only punctual but early for class every week. Although not always called upon to participate in class activities, I gave meaningful inputs that add value to the class learning experience. Being an extrovert, I initiated many group discussions when necessary, and when my peers are in doubt, I actively guide them to the best of my abilities. When someone presents in class, I make sure to pay full attention to them.

All in all, I truly believe that I deserve an "excellent" grade in my class participation with the points mentioned above.

Best Regards,

Royson Ng

Reader Response Draft #3

The webpage “Review: the DJI Mini 2 is the perfect drone for beginners” from Murphy (2020) presents the features and functions of DJI’s photography drone for beginners. The DJI Mini 2 (Mini 2) features include a featherlight design, OcuSync 2.0 transmission, 12-megapixel camera, 3-axis motorized gimbal, Return-To-Home (RTH) function, and long flight time. Weighing at 249g and a folded dimension of 131x81x58 mm makes it convenient to bring out for photography and videography. One of the features includes capturing high-quality footage and photos with “digital zooming to about 2x if you’re shooting in 4K, you can get usable 3x zoom footage at 1080p” as stated in the article by Kronfli and Wilson (2022). The Mini 2 utilizes OcuSync 2.0 transmission for a dependable and long-range distance operation of up to 10 km (Rojwongsuriya, 2023). It is also equipped with a 3-axis motorized gimbal that provides stable and smooth footage, even in windy conditions or during rapid maneuvers. In addition, this drone features the RTH function that programs the drone to automatically return to its takeoff location if it loses contact with the remote controller or when the battery is critically depleted (Murphy, 2020). The drone offers a flight time of up to 31 minutes when fully charged allowing good productivity in a single flight (“DJI Mini 2 VS Mavic Mini”, 2020). With huge improvements in software and hardware, the Mini 2 is the best beginner-level drone in the market compared to its predecessor the DJI Mavic Mini (Mavic Mini).

One improvement in the hardware of the Mini 2 is the 12-megapixel camera. According to the article “DJI Mini 2 VS Mavic Mini” (2020), the upgraded camera not only allows users to shoot at 4K resolution at up to 30 frames per second but also when recording in 1080p, the camera offers a 4x digital zoom feature. In contrast, the Mavic Mini only shoots at a maximum quality of 2.7K resolution with no zoom function. For long-distance filming, the Mini 2 is a better candidate compared to the Mavic Mini.

Another improvement, in terms of software, is the OcuSync 2.0 transmission. Cepeda (n.d.-a) states that the Mini 2 provides a seamless switch between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies, expanding its maximum transmission range to 10 km while the Mavic Mini provides up to only a 4 km transmission range. With increased range and connectivity, drone novices can capture shots from greater heights and distances with the Mini 2.

In addition, the RTH function is an essential feature incorporated into the software. The Mini 2 offers three distinct Return-To-Home modes: Smart RTH, Failsafe RTH, and Low Battery RTH (Cepeda, n.d.-b). This function serves as a safety measure, enabling the Mini 2 to autonomously return to a predefined home location in scenarios such as loss of connection with the remote controller, a critically low battery, or at the discretion of the user (Murphy, 2020). In the Low Battery RTH mode, it is capable of assessing whether its existing battery charge is adequate for a safe return to the Home Point. Hence, when the battery reaches a critically low level, Low Battery RTH will be initiated (Cepeda, n.d.-b).  To conclude, the RTH function is crucial in a beginner drone. This prevents the Mini 2 from being lost and stranded, providing beginners with peace of mind and enhancing the overall flying experience.

Although there are numerous improvements in the hardware and software of the Mini 2, it lacks the obstacle avoidance technology that many high-end drones are equipped with. According to Pavic (2021), the lack of sensors corresponds to not having autonomous track mode and the ability to create hyperlapses. Also, the drone is suboptimal for flying in low light conditions (Kronfli & Wilson, 2022). This increases the stress novice drone users would have if they were flying in confined spaces. However, most novices fly in open terrain, and the restrictions that the Mini 2 comes with do not affect users in operating in most conditions which makes it suitable for them.

In conclusion, the DJI Mini 2 surpasses the DJI Mavic Mini in terms of camera quality, upgraded transmission, and RTH function. With the evidence presented in this article, the Mini 2 stands as the preferred choice with many improved features for beginner drone enthusiasts.

2 minute pitch

Self Introduction Letter

Subject: Self Introduction Letter

Dear Professor Blackstone,

I am Royson, a first-year student studying mechanical engineering at the Singapore Institute of Technology. I am writing to introduce myself and to share my expectations and goals from your class.

Having graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a diploma in aerospace technology and a Specialization in Aviation Management, I jumped at the opportunity to join the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) as an engineer. During my occupation, my team and I maintained and oversaw the flying operations of unmanned aircraft. Since young, I have always had an interest in aircraft which explains my desire to study in this field. I would watch clips of aviation disasters during my leisure as it fascinates me to find out the causes and events leading to the accident. I learnt the importance of communication as most disasters originate from poor communication. The experience in school and work further piqued my interest in expanding my knowledge and skills.

One of my strengths is that I am a good team player. Throughout my five years working in the RSAF, I met people of various backgrounds and personalities. We faced numerous challenges along the way, but we conquered and delivered optimal results due to our strong collaboration. Additionally, I was awarded the Best Airman of the Month in February 2021, which recognized my leadership skills and ability to work with my colleagues. Despite being a good team player, I do have areas to improve on which is to become an active listener. As someone who is not afraid to shy away from conversation, I sometimes overshadow the voices of my peers.

I believe that communication is a two-way process and hence, my goal is to become an active listener and to be able to better express myself in an organized manner, ultimately becoming a better communicator.

Thank you for taking your time and I hope to learn more about you as time passes!

Best Regards,
Royson

Interpretation of the quote

“While all engineers should have good communication skills, global engineers face additional challenges, making effective communication an imperative.” Debra Kraft, Careers Content Writer, Demand Media (2016) Global Engineers face more language barriers and cultural differences as compared to engineers who work locally mainly. Although engineers need to have good communication skills to communicate effectively, global engineers have the added challenge of needing to understand more social and cultural norms in the location they are working in.
